Creating a native application for smart devices

The Goal

Designing a native app for a smart device or system of devices. The app should allow the user to easily adjustthe temperature, lights, music in their environment and can include any other additional features you thinkwould be relevant. Take advantage of emerging technologies you see fit, such as voice command or motioncontrol, to take this concept to the next level. Your selected user demographics should define the use cases, feature set and user flow.

Demographic User Personas

In a recent study, Harvard Business found that people tend to adopt one of eightmindsets and behave a certain way in their homes. They categorized smart-homecustomers into a set of eight personas to consider their different characteristics beforedesigning smart-home products.

This buyer uses tech to help manage their busy city life while at home. “Living in the city whereeverything is hectic, I treasure a place that I can come home to and feel safe and relaxed.”

Active urbanite

Creative Homebody

This buyer uses tech to heighten sensory experiences and create a personal oasis in their home. Asone user told us, “I designed everything the way I want in my home. I painted the ceiling black and Iput studs on the ceiling to be like stars. And then the light bulb is acting as the moon.”

Reluctant Tech Adopters

This buyer uses tech for convenience but is more hesitant to invest than early adopters. “My homeis my private time. I want to switch off from the outside and embrace my own hobbies at home.”

Personal Organizer

This buyer uses tech to be more efficient and productive while at home. “I always try to stay cleanand organized at home. I schedule my bike trainer rides so I don’t disturb my neighbors. And I havetwo sound machines to sleep and block traffic noise from outside.”

Fun-loving Parent

This buyer uses tech to bring the family together for fun time. “I feel happy, creative, and loved athome. Sunday funday is my favorite.”

Drone Parent

This buyer uses tech to keep their family safe as well as manage the household schedule and makeday-to-day tasks more efficient. “I feel in control in home because I have full visibility. I used a pancamera as a baby monitor. Now I can watch my family through it to see if they are at home.”

Family Connectors

This buyer uses tech for social connections. “I have a gallery wall full of my family photos. My familymeans my whole world to me. I post to Facebook every day to stay connected to friends andrelatives.”

Luxury Spenders

This buyer embraces technology in the home to convey a sense of status and tech-savviness.“Home is your personal headquarters that further identifies your location and place of personal growth.”

Competitor Analysis & List of Features

Comparing Designs and Wireframes of different Smart home apps and products helpedme to find the best solution and also created a symbiosis of best features. Some competitors I analyzed were:

To gernerate the best solution for potential users, I was collecting a core list of featuresthat matched perfectly to our personas:

Information architecture

I defined this sitemap based on the insights, gained from the competitor analysis andmade sure that all personas could interact with the key elements below.

Visual Direction

Due to the limited time frame, I started to create a very rudimentary visual direction based on colors and fonts right away. This allowed me to skip an essential part of the design process - The wireframing.

Since there is no existing CI or visual design, I developed a clean and modern structure based on theToptal Logo and limited all technical and functional aspects to native solutions within an iOS andAndroid app.

In this case, I decided to design for iOS.

Navigation Bar

According to the information architecutre and personas, I created a navigation bar with the following features:

Devices

Overview

An Overview to all devices in your smart home system with individual key information and the possibility tointeract with your devices in the easiest way possible.

Devices

Detail

Each device has it’s individual functionalites and needs to be treated individually.

Displaying the most used and most important buttons on top whilst listing the details atthe bottom helps the user to interact in a fast and very efficient way.

Rooms

An Overview that provides clarity about your system.Seeing and editing the devices in specific rooms helps to manage scenes and actions.

Scenes

One of the most important features in a smart home app is a scene.Having the ability to create functionalities that interact with each other in a personalized way is the heart of every smart home system.

More

(Settings)

Even if you don’t use it a lot. Settings are important. So combining all important settings and even more within one tab will make the app more structured and easier to use.

Home

(Dashboard)

Each person behaves differently and thinks in a different way. That’s why every Home Screen needs to be different. I created the dashbaord in a way that every individual is able to personalize the first screen.

Chart Position

If an app or game is on the Top Charts, you’ll see the ranking on its app page. So you know how popular it is right now.

Videos

So. Many. Videos. Watch how an app works before you download it or get a preview of the gameplay.

Ratings and Reviews

The streamlined ratings system makes it easy to see how much an app is loved. And when a developer answers a question, everyone can see the response.

Editors’ Choice Badge

This seal of approval is given to apps and games that really deserve a download. If you see this, you know it’s going to be extraordinary.

In-App Purchases

It’s easy to find and make in-app purchases for the apps and games you already own. You can also subscribe to an app or level up in a game even if it’s not on your device yet.
